About Chieh 'Jacky' Chen...

I am a backend software engineer with eight years building and running production software, six of them in Go. My depth is in distributed microservices, API design across REST, GraphQL, and gRPC, CI/CD automation, and cloud migration to AWS and Kubernetes. I own features end to end — design through production support — and I work comfortably across frontend, security, and business stakeholders.

I came to this field the long way around, as a career changer with an M.S. in Computer Science earned at night while working full time. Most of my work lives in the parts of a system users never see: query layers, alerting pipelines, API contracts, build pipelines, and the debugging that keeps all of it honest. I have built for endpoint security forensics, oil and gas telemetry, and manufacturing floor hardware — domains where being wrong is expensive and the data does not wait for you.

I speak English and Mandarin Chinese fluently, and Japanese at a business conversational level. Outside of work I founded and run Houston Nihongo Kai, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that grew out of a Japanese language meetup. The rest of my time goes to a camera, a sketchbook, a very long trance playlist, and an ongoing search for the next good meal.

Professional Experience

Software Engineer

May 2022 – Present

Cisco Systems, Inc. — Remote, US

Go backend engineer on Cisco Secure Endpoint / XDR Orbital, an endpoint query and forensics platform used by enterprise security and IT investigation teams.

  • Designed and shipped the custom Python scripting capability that lets IT and security investigators run scripts against managed endpoints across an organization to collect forensic data at scale
  • Build and maintain the GraphQL and REST endpoints backing the product UI, including the SQL query layer, data transformation, and response shaping
  • Partner directly with the frontend team on feature design and API contracts, translating UI requirements into GraphQL schema and backend query design
  • Maintain MITRE ATT&CK categorization across OS queries and scripts, updating the schema and taxonomy as new techniques and mappings are published
  • Author and maintain Swagger / OpenAPI specifications; triage and resolve work from the GitHub issue queue

Backend Application Developer

Jan 2019 – May 2022

National Oilwell Varco — Houston, TX

Lead backend feature developer on NOV's MAX monitoring suite — Go and C# microservices delivering real-time drilling and fracking telemetry to field operators, built inside an internal startup group.

  • Delivered a $500K client program: decomposed a legacy C# application into deployable microservices with a centralized backend and a versioning scheme that unblocked independent release cadence
  • Built the reporting engine — parameterized time-series queries generating PDF summary reports with Highcharts visualizations, used daily by drilling and fracking operators
  • Built multi-channel alerting on streaming telemetry thresholds, delivering to SMS, email, and the customer web portal
  • Key contributor to the operations scheduler used to plan and coordinate oil and gas field jobs
  • Owned 10+ automated build and deploy pipelines, cutting manual release steps out of the team's delivery process
  • Migrated the C# application, 10 microservices, and 4 databases to AWS Kubernetes, including networking and firewall troubleshooting through cutover
  • Defined API contracts in Postman and Swagger; translated business-unit requirements into actionable UI/UX and engineering stories

Software Engineer

Jun 2018 – Dec 2018

TowWorks — Lake Jackson, TX

  • Built and released client-facing reporting tools serving 1,000+ paying customers
  • Used SQL and JSON parsing to drive a proprietary report generator
  • Validated business-critical functionality for barge clients ahead of each release
  • Led the redesign and implementation of the company homepage in Bootstrap

Software Engineering Intern

Summer 2017

Applied Optoelectronics — Sugar Land, TX

  • Built an equipment sensor monitoring application in JavaScript and .NET over Modbus TCP for manufacturing-floor hardware
  • Developed SQL and MES data reports from requirements gathered in SAP integration meetings
  • Demoed a working proof of concept to the internal team, earning a return offer the following year

Community Leadership

Off the Clock

The hobbyist half. Same curiosity, fewer stack traces.

Jacky drinking boba at a cafe, wearing a Hello Kitty and friends t-shirt Priorities: boba, then everything else

I shoot photo and video — mostly while travelling, mostly street and architecture. Some of it ends up on my channel, the rest lives further down this page. I draw. I listen to an unreasonable amount of house and trance. I watch anime, which is roughly how the Japanese started.

I travel to Japan and Taiwan whenever I can, and as much of the US as fits in a long weekend. Outdoors I am usually swimming, hiking, climbing something, or sitting in a hot spring recovering from it.

Above all of it, though, I am a foodie. And what good is good food without good friends? I like my friends' company just as much as the meal.

On Repeat

Playlists I keep coming back to — house, trance, and a lot of Japanese pop. Hit play, or find them on my channel.

Trance

Long drives and long build-ups.

Pop

Mostly J-pop. T.M.Revolution, Daoko, SennaRin.
